Solo Traveller
We chartered the 47ft sailing yacht Local Hero for six hours, to meander from Hebe Haven up to the islands of the Geopark (north-east Hong Kong/NT). It was wonderful, and a highlight of almost 30 trips to Hong Kong over the years. Yes, it is expensive — two crew, and in this instance only two passengers — but then buying the yacht new will put you back around $HK4mil or more, so for most of us this is the only realistic way of experiencing open ocean sailing. Chartering it for ourselves for that amount of time meant we could work out exactly where we wanted to go (with the advice of the skipper of course), and change the plan as the wind changed! There are a whole lot of “standard” tour ideas, see the website, but it was rewarding to do as we wished. The boat can legally take 12 passengers, but I would suggest 6 would be a better maximum for comfort, and 2-4 ideal. We brought our own lunch (hotel packed it), which made sense for us.
And a footnote: ocean sailing is not like being on a ferry cruising on the harbour on fireworks night: expect bumps and a fair bit of scrambling as the yacht tacks up the coast…. but of course, that is a big part of the appeal.
Everything was great. Thanks for organizing on short notice.
